A La Verne deck spends much of the year in hard, direct heat, and that heat works on two things first: the finish on the boards and the screws holding them down. Stain dries out and flakes, wood shrinks away from its fasteners, and screw heads start to stand proud of the surface. Our deck, patio and shade cover work across the San Gabriel Valley is planned around that wear, beginning at the footings.

Heat, finish and fasteners

Each hot afternoon, a deck board gives up a little moisture and narrows, and each cool night it eases back. Over many of those cycles the motion loosens face screws and lifts nail heads, so we fasten with coated or stainless deck screws sized for the board and pre-drill close to the ends. A finish lasts longer on wood that sits in shade for part of the day, which means a cover over the busiest corner helps the boards as much as the people using them. Pale capped composite and cellular PVC hold their color and stay cooler to stand on than dark planks.

Under a raised deck, and under a cover

When a deck stands well above the yard, the space beneath it gathers dry leaves, stored lumber and whatever the wind carries in. That pile holds damp against the posts and gives termites a path, so we leave enough clearance to rake it out and keep framing off the soil. A patio cover is a small structure of its own. Each post needs a footing sized on the drawings, a metal base that lifts the wood off the slab, and a beam tied down against uplift from gusts. The city building department reviews the cover along with any attached deck.
