Kitchen Remodeling for Humid Coastal Air
Damp air swells cabinet doors, rusts hardware and fogs the windows. A good coastal kitchen handles that with materials and ventilation, not just looks.
Materials that stay put
Near the water, cabinet boxes made from moisture-resistant plywood hold up better than particleboard, and painted finishes need a good primer to stop swelling at the edges. Hardware in stainless steel or a quality plated finish keeps its look. Quartz and porcelain counters are easy to keep clean and do not need sealing. We go through these choices with samples so you can see them side by side.
Ventilation and windows
A range hood that vents outside, sized for the cooktop, does more for a coastal kitchen than almost any finish choice. It clears steam and grease before they settle on cabinets. If the kitchen window is old or leaking, the remodel is the moment to replace it and flash it properly, since the wall is often open around it anyway.
Layout and the written quote
Moving a sink or a range means moving plumbing, gas or a dedicated circuit. Taking out a wall may need a beam. We price those changes as their own lines, so you can see what a new layout costs compared with keeping the current one and changing the finishes.
Kitchen Remodeling: questions
Yes. Keeping the sink, range and refrigerator where they are keeps plumbing and electrical work small. New cabinets, counters, lighting and a vented hood can still change the room a great deal.
Most do, because of electrical, plumbing or structural changes. Cosmetic work like new counters on existing cabinets often does not. We tell you which parts of your scope need one.
Look at the box material and the finish more than the door style. Plywood boxes, sealed edges and stainless hinges last longest in damp air. We bring samples to the visit.
