Decks & Patios in Sun Valley
Sun Valley decks, patio covers and paver patios built for valley heat and dry wind: flashed ledgers, sound footings and boards that shrug off hard sun.
Sun Valley decks bake for months on end. Long stretches of hard sun dry out wood fibers, open checks along the grain and fade stain within a couple of summers, while dry wind pushes grit into every gap. Then a sudden storm drives water against a ledger that may never have been flashed. Our deck, patio cover and paver layouts start from that cycle of heat, wind and the occasional downpour.
Where afternoon heat hits hardest
Sun works on the surface first. Untreated softwood boards check and cup, painted railings chalk, and screws loosen as the wood shrinks around them through hot afternoons and cooler nights. The quieter damage sits lower down. A ledger lag bolted straight to the siding lets each storm soak into the rim joist, and posts set on bare soil wick moisture up from below. Before suggesting new boards, we crawl beneath the framing, probe the ledger, joists and post bases, then lay the photos out for the owner, so any choice is grounded in how the wood really looks.
Boards, covers and patios that suit the valley
Boards with a polymer cap keep their color and skip sealing altogether, yet they turn hot under bare feet, so a patio cover or shade sail over the sitting area makes a real difference. Thermally modified wood and dense hardwoods stay cooler and look warmer, at the cost of an oiling routine. For ground-level space, interlocking pavers over a tamped gravel bed flex with heat far more gracefully than one large slab. Whatever sits on top, the framing below is treated lumber rated for ground contact, joined with coated hangers and screws, and the ledger is wrapped in membrane and capped with metal flashing.
Decks & Patios in Sun Valley: questions
That depends on what we find under the boards. When posts, girders and the ledger are all firm, the frame can take fresh decking and new railings. Soft joists, a rotted rim or footings that have settled call for rebuilding the frame. We probe each member and show you the results before recommending either path.
PVC and capped composite keep their tone through long summers and skip the yearly sealing, though they get warm in full sun. Thermally modified wood and hardwoods stay cooler but want regular oil. Shade from a patio cover helps any surface last and keeps it comfortable underfoot.
Because Sun Valley sits within the City of Los Angeles, its building department checks the drawings and sends inspectors during construction. Our set covers footing sizes, joist and beam spans, the ledger attachment and guard heights. We file that set, respond when the reviewer marks it up, and every joist, beam and post then goes in exactly where those stamped sheets place it.
