In Alhambra the weather a deck fights is mostly overhead. Long stretches of sun bake the boards, gusty dry air draws moisture from cut ends, and then a hard winter storm soaks every seam the heat has opened. We plan decks, patio slabs and covers for that cycle, starting with the framing and its tie to the house. The boards on top come after, picked to lie flat and feel comfortable underfoot.

Sun, dry wind and a deck frame

Sun is slow but thorough. It breaks down the top layer of untreated softwood until the grain lifts and checks open, and those cracks hold rain when a storm finally arrives. Dry wind makes it worse by shrinking boards unevenly, so screws back out and rail posts work loose at the base. Under the surface, the joint between ledger and wall can stay damp long after the yard has dried. When we look at an existing Alhambra deck, we start below it, probing posts, beams and that ledger before anyone talks about new boards.

Patios, covers and the boards on top

For a ground-level patio, pavers on a compacted base or a poured slab pitched away from the foundation both handle heat without fuss. A patio cover changes the whole yard, and we set its posts on their own footings and give it a gutter or a planned drip line so a downpour lands where the soil can take it. Up on a deck, capped composite resists fading, while a light color keeps bare feet comfortable. Clear redwood or a dense hardwood still makes sense if you want real wood and will oil it.
