Malibu decks face breaking waves on the beach side and brush-covered canyons on the hillside, and both are hard on materials. Beachfront decks take salt spray and storm surge, while canyon decks must meet wildfire rules. We build to engineered plans with stainless hardware, fire-rated surfaces where required and the city's coastal process handled from the start.

Beachfront decks

Decks on the sand side sit on pilings or cantilevered framing exposed to spray, wind and sometimes waves. Framing must be treated for marine exposure, and every bolt, hanger and screw should be stainless. Surfaces in capped composite, PVC or dense hardwood resist salt. Glass or stainless cable guards keep the ocean in sight, bolted through sealed posts. Older beachfront decks are inspected from underneath for rust and rot, and the owner sees the photos before any recommendation. Pilings are checked at the waterline.

Canyon decks and fire rules

Much of Malibu carries the state's top wildfire rating, so deck boards there have to pass an ignition-resistance test and the area under a deck may need enclosing or clearing. Fire-rated composite, approved hardwoods and noncombustible surfaces such as porcelain on steel framing are common choices. After a fire, rebuilt decks must meet current rules, and we coordinate with the house rebuild. Hillside decks need engineered footings and sometimes geology review. Every plan is checked against the fire and coastal rules before submission.
