In Studio City the weather that tests a deck comes from above and from the side: strong valley sun through the warm months, dry gusts that strip finish from wood, and a hard storm now and then that drives rain against the wall. Our work starts with what holds the deck up and keeps water out of the house. The boards and the patio surface come after that.

Patios that drain and stay put

A patio in the valley sits on soil that dries hard and then takes a burst of water during a storm. We grade the base so runoff moves away from the foundation, and we keep the finished surface below siding and the stucco weep screed. Concrete pavers on compacted gravel flex with the ground and can be lifted and reset later. Poured concrete needs control joints and a broom finish so it is not slick when wet. Light stone and pale pavers stay cooler under afternoon sun than dark ones, which matters on a patio people walk across barefoot.

Raised decks, ledgers and railings

A raised deck depends on a connection hidden behind the boards. Where the ledger meets the wall we install a membrane, then metal flashing over the top, before any joist hangers go on. Hangers and screws are coated or stainless, sized to the plan. Footings go down to firm soil, and posts sit on standoff bases so the end grain stays dry. Railing posts are through-bolted and blocked so they do not loosen as the wood moves through dry months and wet ones. We bring this same detail to projects in Toluca Lake, North Hollywood and Valley Village.
